Tools of the Trade

You will not need a large arsenal of equipment. Essential is a really good pair of hand pruners, often called pruning snips. These come in a variety of models, sizes and qualities. Some will feel comfortable in your hand, and other will seem awkward, so it is wise to visit a store where you can hold and test several. Try them in an actual twig-cutting test, if possible. The better the quality, the more you will enjoy pruning. The author's favorite is a Felco Hand Pruner which has served him well for over twenty years. If the best seem an extravagance, leave broad hints for someone to get you a pair for Christmas, birthday or anniversary.

If you will be working with large old shrubs, or young trees, long-handled lopping shears are a boon. However, a small, curved-blade pruning saw does the same sorts of jobs and often demands less muscle power. Do not get a pruning saw with teeth on both top and bottom, for in tight situations you will do more damage than good.
